The competition entries from Chichester Gate?s Draw a pirate competition were on display for the whole of the weekend, with over 100 entries choosing the winners was near impossible, it didn?t help that the drawing were all of such a standard, The Chichester Observer picked the winner for the over 12s and the under 12s. Safety First this Summer!
26th July 2006
As temperatures soar, so does the chance of young children and pets suffering in cars. Don't risk tragedy; a little forethought can make all the difference.
The ever-vigilant security guards at Chichester Gate Leisure Park are always on the look-out for distressed children and pets in cars. Thankfully, due to their vigilance, they've never had a serious incident. But they want to keep it that way.
"We don't encourage anybody to leave a child or animal unattended in a vehicle," says Head of Security Mark Holland. "People should never make the mistake of thinking 'Oh, I'll only be a few minutes' - especially in hot weather: young children can't regulate their body temperatures like adults and it can take minutes for things to go very badly wrong. No-one wants to see that happen."
Tim Miles, the RSPCA's chief veterinary adviser, compares hot cars to ovens - and there are potential legal repercussions for careless pet owners: under the Protection of Animals Act, anyone found guilty by the courts of causing suffering to an animal faces a fine of up to £5,000 and/or six months in prison. Owners can also be banned from keeping animals, possibly for life.
"We'll work very hard to help make sure that this doesn't happen to you - the security staff here at Chichester Gate are very much on the case - but prevention and forethought are the watchwords and parents and pet owners need to remain aware of their responsibilities," says Mark.
"If anyone sees a child or an animal in distress, please don't assume that action has already been taken. Please don't be afraid to alert our security staff; they'll be only too happy to help you."

West Sussex's World Cup Craziest Dad
"My Dad's the World Cup Craziest dad in West Sussex!"
26th June 2006
West Sussex County Times newspaper and Chichester Gate Leisure Park last week awarded Horsham father Andrew Pusey the title of the county's most World Cup crazy dad.
Receiving a Microsoft X-Box and the latest FIFA World Cup game from Chichester Gate, football mad dad Andrew Pusey from Horsham celebrated his well-earned title in style with a colleague, as he enjoyed a complimentary VIP night out at the Chicago Rock Café to watch the England-Sweden game last Tuesday evening. Mr Pusey was also presented with a voucher for a complimentary meal for four and bottle of wine from The Gatehouse, so that he can enjoy another great night of football fun in the next few weeks of the World Cup.
After being inundated with competition entries, the judges unanimously decided that Andrew Pusey should take the title. Nominated by his daughter Hannah 17, her entry explained, "He listens to the world cup anthems really loud in his car and knows all the words. He's happiest when eating, drinking and watching football!"
When receiving his prize, Andrew confessed he had six England flags on his car and almost always plays and sings English football songs while driving about with the family or travelling to work in Horsham where he's a Care Manager for adults with learning difficulties.
"My clients love it! They do get behind my passion for the game, even if they think I'm a little mad," says Andrew. "I can't help but belt out an English football tune, particularly during the World Cup! My family's behind me on it, especially my grandson, who loves it when I sing along to the music - although he is only 12 months old... he's clearly got good taste."
Clair Moffat, Manager of Chicago Rock Café at Chichester Gate, who awarded Andrew with his prize, was delighted with the number of entries in the competition. She commented, "There are clearly a lot of children out there with football crazy dads - but I think the judges got it right, because Andrew is clearly a very deserving winner of the crown!"

Revealed! Chichester's most hopeless romantic
14th February 2006
Chichester Gate has completed its search for Sussex's least romantic man and can confirm that Mr Barry Hall has become the first winner of the title.
Nominated by his wife, Charlotte, Barry impressed Judges at Chichester Gate with his complete lack of ability to buy presents for his loved one. When asked what her husbands best gift was, Charlotte recounted the story of when her vacuum cleaner was having trouble sucking up dirt; "I merely made a comment on the state on the Hoover and two days later, for Valentine's Day, he bought me four new Hoover bags!".
Mr Hall's personal habits also scored well with the judges; Charlotte continued, "He has this habit of filling up the toilet with toilet roll so that the water won't splash him. Then it gets blocked so yours truly has to clear the thing!".
Frankie and Benny's Manager, Sue Dougan, was optimistic about the couple: "Despite Barry's flaws, Charlotte made a point of commenting that she wouldn't change him for the world. They are clearly very much in love and I daresay that their relationship is stronger because they are tolerant of each others habits.
"However, Barry obviously needs some help in the expressing his love to Charlotte so I hope that they both enjoy this evening out, chauffeur driven to and from their home will enable them to have a fantastic St. Valentine's Day".

Chichester chooses play time over queue time
4th January 2006
News reports are varied about the state of the retail industry and whilst a more detailed picture of High Street health will emerge over the next few weeks, as the UK's leading retailers release sales figures, it's the leisure parks and centres who are first to have noticed Christmas turn a corner!
As retailers report an upturn in voucher purchases and a trend for gift buying in January sales, the money saved seems to be directed towards the booming leisure industry.
Samantha Fay, Marketing Manager for Chichester Gate has noticed a big change in recent footfall figures. She said "We are experiencing the busiest Christmas and New Year ever with up to 30% more people visiting each week than the same time last year. Narnia and King Kong at Cineworld have been a huge success but it's also the restaurants and bowling that are also seeing a big upturn in customers which proves that it's not only on the High Street where we're spending our money.
"Historically we cater for a lot of parties at this time of year but now we're also seeing families and friends continue to spend their spare money on their leisure time. Our footfall figures show that November was an average of 25% up on 2004 and December a massive 30% with bookings coming in fast for what looks to be a very busy January."
Frankie & Benny's Restaurant at the centre supports the view, restaurant Manager Sue Dougan said, "We've had a really super Christmas and long may it continue, I'd say we've turned a corner and people certainly seem to be spending more money on their leisure time than ever before.
"We're also competing with the retail sales and have strong offers of our own, for example we've complimentary meal vouchers to give away in January to use in February that will appeal to the bargain hunters out there to keep our figures looking good. I'd say now that the post Christmas period is as almost as important for us as pre Christmas which is a definite change in the market."
This year more than ever before we are buying our friends and families shopping vouchers for Christmas to spend in January and spending more money on leisure time. When £20 in December is worth at least £30 in January, is there any wonder? Chichester Gate asked 100 customers over the past two days if they were out for a special occasion and the overwhelming response has been that they are simply out with friends and family.
Regular cinema goers Steve & Jane Wilcock from Selsey had been out spending their Christmas vouchers in Chichester before heading off for dinner at the centre, Steve said "We didn't give each other a single gift, it's all vouchers this year so that we don't end up seeing our gifts in the sales with 50% off and now we've still money to go out and have fun for once."
Oona Richardson said that she bought gift vouchers for all of her friends and family so that they could go sale shopping in the New Year. It meant that her money went further and it took all of 5 minutes to do her Christmas shopping. She was out with her three children to go bowling and said that she and her husband have noticed that Christmas hasn't cost as much this year.
Overall, the public are far too money conscious to spend money in December on products that are guaranteed to come down in the New Year. With retail owners left with no choice but to bow to public demand and give in to a change in retail spend perhaps next Christmas we'll see the sales start in Mid December?
